Halloween Scream Dream

UPDATE!
So here it is, Halloween. I'm proud of my costume this year, though I'm pretty sure there's no way I will ever top last year's affair. But I'm still proud, gul-dernit! This year features another costume collab between me and Toby. I'm Peppermint Patty and he's Marcie.

Every piece of my outfit is HUGE. My only regret is that I am not physically able to make my bangs work like that. On tap 4 2-nite: Possible party, waiting for trick-or-treaters, and watching "Ernest Scared Stupid". It's gonna' be a doozy.

But aside from having great Halloween costumes, I've been working at Lee's Gallery at the Mall of America drawing portraits, of celebrities and commoners alike. (That's right, I drew the Serena Williams, oh-ho-ho!)

So yes, I too have a merit show on display. It's way way up on the fourth floor, by the bathrooms at the south end of the hall. (I know what you're thinking, "The fourth floor is only WAY up. Not WAY WAY up." To that I say, "if you think that then you're on the wrong floor." And you can take that to the bank)
In the process of hanging up the show, however, I realized how nice it is to have such easy access to my work. It's all right there, up on a wall where I can see it, or in a book that I can simply thumb through. It's such a nice change from fumbling through all of my Bristol board to get to something. I even find looking at it on a computer to be cumbersome, but up on a wall or all together in a book is so...simple. So I think when I get a house of my own, I'll have to hang all of my work up on the walls, not out of egotism, but out of sheer convenience.

BRAWL!

So, the Smash Bros. series have got to be some of my favorite games. I could play them until my eyes fall out of my skull, which I really hope they don't, because I CAN'T STAND THINGS HAPPENING TO PEOPLE'S EYES.
So anyway, like everyone else on the face of the earth, I was very excited for the release of Brawl, and acquired it as soon as I was able. IT'S SO FUCKIN' COOL! I can't wait to unlock everything! Sweet.
In terms of characters, I've been floating around a bit with my usage. Obviously there's something good to be had in every character, but so far some of my favorites include Pit, Kirby, Falco, Marth, Lucas, and Ike. At the moment, I think Ike is my numba' one guy, despite how cheap everyone thinks he is. He's slow. Really slow. But if you can get the timing down on his moves he's pretty terrific. Um, I guess I'm done being nerdy. I guess.

So last night, Max, Zach, Vicky and I decided to fulfill our life-long dream of eating buffalo wings, so we took a quick 40 minute jaunt to way the hell north Minneapolis where the legendary "Buffalo Wild Wings" was situated (it took 40 minutes because we kept getting the directions wrong). And what were we to find aside from our coveted buffalo meat? A horrifying and cavernous sports bar where all of the cars were double parked and everyone wore a letterman's jacket. We had arrived.
To our dismay, there was a two hour wait for a table because there was a UFC fight on that night and the place was packed. For those of you who are unaware, UFC is basically a mixed martial arts tournament, often called "Pride fighting," and it can commonly be viewed on Spike TV. But I digress.
Instead of waiting two hours for a table, wading through a sea of people and suffering under the ever-oppressive din of big screen TVs and sports commentary, we decided to get it to go. While waiting for our wings, we amused ourselves with the photo wall behind us. It was a wall covered in polaroids of people who had attempted to eat a basket of "Blazin' Buffalo Wings" in under 58 seconds (the current record). The contenders had written their name on their pictures, but sometimes they would include something inspirational--like the famous line "Get her done," a phrase coined by Larry the Cable Guy. I'm sad to say that this phrase appeared more than once.
When our food was ready we hightailed it out of there and made it back to MCAD, where we proceeded to eat and watch some Daria. Our foray into this unknown and mystical land will not be forgotten. Our memories will continue to be filled with its whimsy and wonder.

Also, the wings were pretty good.

I really want to do something different with my comics. I'm becoming more and more intrigued by the prospect of using alternate mediums. I've been looking at this comic artist David Mack's work for the past couple of days. He does a comic called Kabuki that is pretty much unlike any other comic I've seen before.
There's collage and painting out the ying-yang (ring) in there. And it's not just the use of medium either, but also the arrangement of all of the information and a whole host of other reasons that makes it seem so innovative. I don't know if I could have ever thought of that stuff on my own. I want to be good enough to do this kind of shit. I've recently been feeling as though my work's too run-of-the-mill or average. I guess I feel like it's too "in the box." I want to make something new and different but I just have no clue as to how to go about doing it. I suppose I just have to give it a shot.

Also, I just read Jeffrey Brown's "Be a Man" comic--a parody of his earlier work "Clumsy"--and it's rather terrific. T'would be in thine best interest to checkith him out.

This Saturday I was...fortunate..? Enough to see Matthew McConaughey's newest "romcom". And boy, the Fool's Gold I saw. In order to justify being in the theater at the time, I decided to keep track of several important categories. The stats break down as follows:

People getting hit with things/collisions: 23

*Direct references to sex: 10

Number of times Matthew McConaughey wore a shirt: 10

Number of times Matthew McConaughey was shirtless: 9

*I feel this statistic requires some explaining. By "Direct references to sex" I mainly mean references to Matthew McConaughey's character being good in bed, prostitutes, and blatant sexual inuendos (i.e. a sword landing right in front of a girl's crotch). Well, I think I've mined MY share of gold. FOOL'S gold that is. Specifically.

2 am, reading everyone's blogs, feeling as though I ought to actually post something.

A nice work day today. I finally started the pencils for my Comic 3 assignment. Working title: "The Legend of Joey Batini." It's about a kid in 1950s Brooklyn who gets beat up and has his bike stolen by a bully. He eventually steals it back from the bully's house, only to be arrested for breaking and entering. It's going to be six pages. Today I probably did about two pages worth of pencils.
It's weird. Lately I just don't really care about my assignments very much. Maybe I got burnt out on it or something. I don't know. Oh well. Hopefully I can bring myself to care about the final project for Comic 3. It's supposed to be a 14 page original story. I really want to come up with something good.
In other news, I got a bitchin' coat from my grandma the other day. It's super long and I can zip up around my face and look ridiculous. I can't wait for it to be cold enough to justify doing that. SWISH!
